Chapter 10: What Dylan Taught Me

Chapter 10: What Dylan Taught Me

When Dylan was born, I thought my job was to teach him how to become a man.

Looking back now...

I realize he was teaching me all along.

The greatest lesson Dylan ever taught me was to be myself.

He showed me that happiness doesn't come from trying to fit into someone else's idea of who you should be.

It comes from having the courage to live as the person God created you to be.

Not everyone will understand you.

Not everyone will agree with your choices.

And that's okay.

If you're living a life you're proud of, that's what matters.

But the lesson that has stayed with me the most isn't about being myself.

It's about the bond between a father and his son.

There was a season in our lives when things weren't easy.

We found ourselves sleeping on the floor at my parents' house.

By most people's standards, it wasn't where we wanted to be.

But when I look back today...

I don't remember the floor.

I remember that we were together.

I remember the conversations.

The laughter.

The moments that reminded me that no matter what life throws at you, having someone beside you makes all the difference.

Those nights taught me something I'll never forget.

Children don't remember how much money you had.

They remember how much time you gave them.

They remember whether you showed up.

Whether you listened.

Whether they knew they were loved.

Dylan taught me that being a father isn't about providing a perfect life.

It's about being present through every season of life.

The easy seasons.

The difficult seasons.

And everything in between.

Today, when I build a keepsake for another family, I think about those moments.

Because one day, our children won't remember every gift we bought them.

But they'll remember the fishing trips.

The late-night talks.

The laughter.

The struggles we overcame together.

Those ordinary moments become extraordinary memories.

Thank you, Dylan.

You taught me that the greatest thing a father can give his child isn't a perfect life.

It's the confidence that no matter where life takes them...

They'll never walk through it alone.
