Chapter 14: What Terry Taught Me

Chapter 14: What Terry Taught Me

Some people come into our lives because they're family.

Others become family because they choose to.

Terry is one of those people.

After my father passed away, there was a space in my life that I never thought anyone could fill.

I had lost not only my dad, but my mentor, my fishing partner, and the man who first taught me what it meant to build something with my own hands.

Life could have easily taken Terry and me in different directions.

After all...

I was his former son-in-law.

No one would have blamed him if he had simply moved on with his life.

But he didn't.

He chose to stay.

That decision is something I will never forget.

Without ever trying to replace my father, Terry stepped into my life at a time when I needed someone most.

He became another mentor.

Another teacher.

Another father figure.

He reminded me that the people who truly care about you don't disappear when circumstances change.

They stay.

Terry also gave me something that has become part of who I am.

He shared his craftsmanship.

He taught me that building something with your hands isn't just about creating an object.

It's about creating something that reflects your character.

Patience.

Pride.

Attention to detail.

Doing the job right, even when no one is watching.

Every time I walk into my workshop, I carry lessons from both my father and Terry.

One gave me my foundation.

The other helped me continue building after that foundation was shaken.

For that...

I'll always be grateful.

Because of Terry, I learned one of life's greatest truths.

Family isn't always the people we're born into.

Sometimes...

Family is the people who choose to keep loving us, even when they no longer have to.

Thank you, Terry.

Thank you for choosing to stay.

Thank you for believing in me.

And thank you for helping shape not only the craftsman I became...

But the man I continue to strive to be.
