Chapter 13: What Debbie Taught Me

Chapter 13: What Debbie Taught Me

Family isn't always defined by blood.

Sometimes...

It's defined by the people who choose to love you anyway.

Debbie has always been that person for me.

Even though life changed and our family looked different than it once did, she never stopped being there.

In many ways, she's become my second mom.

I don't think she gets the credit she deserves.

She taught me something that has changed the way I look at relationships.

You don't have to agree with every decision someone makes to continue loving them.

You don't have to understand every choice.

You don't have to approve of every path.

You can simply choose to be there.

That kind of love is rare.

It's the kind of love that doesn't keep score.

It doesn't hold grudges.

It doesn't disappear when life gets complicated.

It shows up.

Again and again.

Through every season of my life, Debbie has been someone I could turn to for advice.

Someone I could trust with my thoughts, my struggles, and even the details I didn't feel comfortable sharing with anyone else.

She listened.

She encouraged.

She cared.

Never because she had to...

But because that's simply who she is.

Watching her taught me that grace is one of the greatest gifts we can give another person.

Grace means loving someone through their imperfections.

Offering understanding before judgment.

Choosing compassion over criticism.

That lesson has changed the way I try to love the people in my own life.

It has reminded me that the strongest relationships aren't built on always agreeing.

They're built on always caring.

Thank you, Debbie.

Thank you for showing me that family isn't always about the name we carry.

Sometimes...

It's about the people who never stop carrying us.
